Mother Armenia is the sword-bearing statue that stands above Yerevan in Victory Park, on the plinth that carried a figure of Stalin until 1962. The monument doubles as a military museum, and the terrace below it is one of the best viewpoints over the city.

Getting there

Roughly 3 km from the centre, about 3 minutes by car, or on foot up the Cascade and through the park above it.

What you see

The statue itself is hammered copper, deliberately severe, holding a sword across both hands. The plinth houses a museum of the Second World War and the Karabakh conflicts, and Soviet-era military hardware is parked on the surrounding ground. From the edge of the terrace the whole city lies below, with Ararat on the skyline when the air is clear.

What to pair it with

Combine with the Cascade and the Opera below it, and with the Komitas Pantheon on the other side of the centre.

When to go

Late afternoon and sunset for the view and the light on Ararat. The haze over the Ararat plain is often thick in high summer, so spring and autumn mornings are clearer.

What is hard about it

The park is tired in places, with dated fairground rides and patchy maintenance. The museum inside the plinth has limited English, and the walk up from the Cascade is a real climb in summer heat.

Common questions

Can you go inside the statue's base?

Yes, the plinth holds a military museum. Opening days and hours are worth checking before you walk up. [VERIFY — confirm current details]

Is it a good place to see Mount Ararat?

It is one of the better city viewpoints, but Ararat is only visible when the haze lifts. Early morning and after rain give the best chance.

How do I get up there?

It is a short drive, or a walk up through the Cascade and into Victory Park above it.
