Aruch Cathedral is a large 7th-century church standing almost alone on the plain beside the Yerevan to Gyumri road, with the ruins of a princely palace next to it. Its scale, rather than its decoration, is what makes the stop worthwhile.

Getting there

The drive is roughly 54 km and about 59 minutes from Yerevan on the app's estimate, almost all of it on main road. The church is visible from the highway.

What you see

The cathedral is a single enormous hall, roofless over part of its length, with deep wall niches and traces of fresco in the apse. Beside it lie the low walls of the palace complex and a scatter of khachkars and carved blocks. The emptiness of the surrounding plain exaggerates the building's height.

What to pair it with

It works as a stop on the way to or from Gyumri, and Talin's ruined cathedral further along the same route makes a reasonable pairing.

When to go

Clear days are better, as there is no shelter and the interior depends on daylight. Summer afternoons on the open plain are hot and glaring.

What is hard about it

There is no roof over much of the building, no interpretation on site and nothing else in the village. The fresco traces are faint and easily missed.

Common questions

Is there an entrance fee?

The site is open ground without regular staffing. [VERIFY — confirm current details]

How long is a visit?

Half an hour covers the cathedral and the palace ruins beside it.

Can I reach it by public transport?

Buses and minibuses run along the Gyumri road and some stop near the village, but timings are irregular and you may wait a long while for a return. A car or taxi is more practical.
