The Yerevan Botanical Garden lies on the northern edge of the city and was founded in 1935 as a research institution. It is a large, shady and somewhat neglected park rather than a manicured show garden, useful mainly as an hour out of the heat.

Getting there

About 7 km from the centre of Yerevan, roughly 8 minutes by car, in the Avan direction. It is also reachable by city transport.

What you see

Wide tree-lined walks, a section of semi-desert and steppe planting typical of the Ararat plain, and collections of trees and shrubs laid out by region. Labelling is patchy and some beds have gone wild. There are glasshouses and a rose area, in variable condition.

What to pair it with

It fits with the Erebuni fortress and museum, or with a Yerevan city day including Cascade and the Genocide memorial at Tsitsernakaberd.

When to go

Late April to June is the best period for flowering; by August much is dry and brown. Mornings are cooler and quieter.

What is hard about it

Maintenance is limited and parts look abandoned, which is the usual complaint. It is not a substitute for a well-funded botanic garden and an hour is enough unless you have a specific botanical interest.
