A tenth-century monastery set low in the Arpa gorge below the village of Gndevaz, ringed by its own defensive wall. It is one of the quieter working-order sites in Vayots Dzor, and the setting in the gorge does as much as the architecture.

Getting there

About 146 km from Yerevan, roughly 2h 40m by car, approached from the Jermuk road and then down into the gorge. The final stretch is a narrow descent that is fine in a normal car in dry weather.

What you see

A compact domed church with a gavit attached to its west side, both in grey stone that has darkened with age. Khachkars stand around the walled courtyard, several of them worn almost flat. The enclosing wall and the cliff behind it make the whole thing feel like a small fort.

What to pair it with

Usually done with Jermuk and its waterfall, and on the way back with Noravank near the main highway.

When to go

Morning or late afternoon, when the gorge is not in flat midday light. The access road is best avoided after heavy rain or in winter snow.

What is hard about it

The descent into the gorge is slow, and the site itself is small enough that the drive outweighs the visit for many people. Interior lighting is minimal and there is nothing in the way of facilities.

Common questions

Is it still used as a monastery?

There is a small religious presence and the church is used for services, so dress modestly. Access arrangements are not posted. [VERIFY — confirm current details]

Can I walk in from Jermuk?

There is a route down through the gorge used by walkers, but it is not signed or maintained, and most visitors drive.

Do I need a 4x4?

Not in dry conditions. In rain, mud or snow the descent becomes the limiting factor rather than the vehicle.
