Smbataberd is a ruined fortress on a long ridge above the Yeghegis valley in Vayots Dzor, with walls following the crest and steep ground on either side. Reaching it means a climb on foot, and the position is the point rather than the masonry.

Getting there

The valley is roughly 109 km and about 1h 59m from Yerevan on the app's estimate, turning off the main southern road. From the end of the drivable track there is a steady uphill walk of an hour or so each way.

What you see

The curtain walls and towers survive to varying heights along the ridge, built from local stone and following the contours closely. Inside the enclosure there is little more than rubble and the outlines of cisterns. The reward is the view along the Yeghegis and Artabuynk valleys and across to the mountains on both sides.

What to pair it with

Tsakhats Kar Monastery is on the facing hillside and is usually done the same day, with the medieval Jewish cemetery at Yeghegis nearby.

When to go

Late spring to autumn. Snow lingers on the ridge into spring, and the climb is punishing in the middle of a summer day, so an early start helps.

What is hard about it

The walk up is the difficulty: steep, exposed, loose underfoot in places and with no water or shade. The fortress itself is bare ruin, so anyone not interested in the walk and the view will feel the effort was out of proportion.

Common questions

How long is the walk to Smbataberd?

Allow roughly an hour up and a little less down from where vehicles stop, depending on how far the track is driveable that season.

Can I drive to the fortress?

No. A high-clearance vehicle shortens the walk, but the final ascent along the ridge is on foot.

Is it suitable for children?

Older children who are used to walking manage it. There are unfenced drops near the walls, so it needs supervision.
