Jermuk is a high spa town in Vayots Dzor, built around mineral springs and best known nationally for its bottled water. A gorge cuts through the town and a waterfall on its edge, and the setting matters more than the buildings.

Getting there

The drive from Yerevan is roughly 148 km and about 2h 41m on the app's estimate, a long haul up a side road off the main southern highway. The last stretch climbs steadily onto the plateau.

What you see

The drinking gallery dispenses mineral water at different temperatures from a row of taps, which is the local ritual. A path leads to the waterfall on the gorge wall, and walks run along the rim through pine woodland. Soviet-era sanatoria and newer hotels stand side by side, some restored and some empty.

What to pair it with

It is a long way from anything else, but Areni, Noravank and the Yeghegis valley are on the way back towards Yerevan.

When to go

Summer is pleasantly cool at this altitude, and the town also runs as a winter destination with snow on the plateau. The waterfall is strongest in spring meltwater.

What is hard about it

The drive is long enough to dominate a day from Yerevan, which with a ten-hour limit leaves little room for other stops. Parts of the town are run down, and the waterfall is modest unless the water is high.

Common questions

Is Jermuk a day trip from Yerevan?

It can be done, but roughly five and a half hours of driving leaves a thin day. Many people stay overnight or visit en route to Syunik.

Can I drink the water from the springs?

Yes, the drinking gallery exists for it, and the taps run at different temperatures. Some find the warmer water unpleasant at first.

Are the spa treatments open to visitors?

Several hotels and sanatoria offer treatments to non-residents, with their own booking arrangements. [VERIFY — confirm current details]
