A prehistoric arrangement of standing basalt stones on open high ground near Sisian, many of them pierced with a round hole. It is often marketed as an Armenian Stonehenge, a comparison that oversells both the scale and what is actually understood about the site.

Getting there

About 206 km from Yerevan, roughly 3h 44m by car, with a short turn off the main southern highway near Sisian onto a rough side track. You park beside the field and walk among the stones.

What you see

Rows and a rough oval of upright stones, most of them waist to head height, set in a wide grassy plateau. The holes bored through many of the stones are the detail people come for, and the lines of stones are easiest to read from slightly higher ground. There are grave cists and scattered rubble among them.

What to pair it with

Usually combined with Shaki waterfall and Sisian town, or as a break on the long drive south towards Goris and Tatev.

When to go

Any dry month. The plateau is windy and wholly unshaded, so avoid the middle of a summer day, and early or late light shows the stone lines better.

What is hard about it

It is smaller and lower than photographs suggest, and the astronomical interpretations you will read about are disputed rather than established. There is no shade, no interpretation and no facilities.

Common questions

How old is it?

It is prehistoric, and the dating is debated among archaeologists rather than settled. Treat any single confident figure you are quoted with caution.

Was it really an observatory?

That claim has been made and has not been generally accepted. The alignments and the bored holes are real; the interpretation is contested.

Is there an entry fee?

Access has been open and unstaffed, but this is not guaranteed. [VERIFY — confirm current details]
