Getting there

The Halidzor station is 4h25 from Yerevan and about 25 minutes from Goris. There is a car park at the station and a cafe.

What you see

The ride itself: two cabins of 25 passengers on a single span, the gorge opening up beneath you, and the monastery appearing on its spur at the far end. The Tatev Great Hermitage is visible below in the gorge, and Halidzor fortress sits near the lower station.

What to pair it with

Tatev monastery at the far end, obviously. Khndzoresk and Goris on the same southern trip.

When to go

Running season roughly April to November, closed Mondays for maintenance and in high wind. Book or arrive early in summer — the queue can be over an hour. Autumn in the gorge is the best of the year.

What is hard about it

Wind stops it, sometimes at short notice, and there is no warning until you arrive. Summer queues are long and there is limited shade at the station. The alternative road down and up the gorge takes about an hour if the cable car is shut, which is worth knowing before you build a day around it.
