Open in the planner →Getting there
About 2h40 from Yerevan on the road north towards Georgia, then up out of the canyon. Trains and marshrutkas serve Alaverdi below; from there it is a taxi or a steep climb.
What you see
Surb Nshan of 976–991 with its later gavit, a free-standing belfry of 1245, the scriptorium, a refectory and a chapel, all in grey-brown basalt and arranged over a sloping site. A relief of the two founding princes holding a model of the church is on the east front. The setting, on a shelf above the canyon with mountains behind, is as much the point as the buildings.
What to pair it with
Sanahin, 20 minutes away and part of the same inscription. Akhtala's frescoed monastery, Odzun's basilica and the Sanahin bridge are all within half an hour.
When to go
Spring to autumn. The canyon is humid in summer and the higher roads can be awkward in winter. Morning light favours the east front.
What is hard about it
It is a long way from Yerevan for a day trip — 5h20 of driving there and back — and the Debed cluster really wants a night in Alaverdi. The village roads up from the canyon are narrow and steep. The complex is large and confusing without a plan or a guide.
Common questions
Why are Haghpat and Sanahin listed together?
UNESCO inscribed them as a single site in 1996 as outstanding examples of Armenian ecclesiastical architecture and medieval scholarship.
How far is Haghpat from Yerevan?
145 km, about 2h40 by road.
Which is better, Haghpat or Sanahin?
Haghpat has the finer setting and the belfry; Sanahin has the better preserved academy and scriptorium. Both take an hour and they are 20 minutes apart.
