- Area Lori

A sixth-century basilica on an open plateau high above the Debed canyon, one of the oldest substantial churches in Armenia. The age of the fabric and the position on the canyon rim are both worth the climb up from the valley.
Open in the planner →Getting there
About 137 km from Yerevan, roughly 2h 29m by car, up a winding road from the Debed valley to the village of Odzun. The church is in the middle of the village with parking alongside.
What you see
A long, low three-aisled basilica in pinkish stone, with a drum and a gallery of arcading along the sides, visibly older in style than most Armenian churches. Beside it stands a carved funerary monument with figural panels on its stelae. The plateau edge nearby gives a long view down into the canyon.
What to pair it with
Combines with Sanahin and Haghpat across the canyon, and with the Sanahin bridge and Akhtala further north.
When to go
Spring to autumn for the clearest views over the canyon. The access road is exposed and can be awkward in winter.
What is hard about it
The church has been restored in recent years and some of the surfaces look noticeably fresh. Interior decoration is sparse, so the interest is largely architectural.
