A twelfth-century stone bridge over the Debed river at the foot of the Sanahin slope, near Alaverdi. It is a single-span medieval bridge still standing in its original form, and it takes a few minutes to see.

Getting there

About 144 km from Yerevan, roughly 2h 38m by car, in the valley below Sanahin on the Alaverdi road. You can park close by and walk onto the bridge.

What you see

A low, slightly humped single arch in dark basalt, with carved animal figures on the parapets at one end. The river runs fast and loud beneath it. From the bank you can see how the arch springs from the rock on either side.

What to pair it with

Done alongside Sanahin and Haghpat monasteries, which are the reason most people are in this valley at all.

When to go

Any time of year; the valley road is kept open. Light in the gorge is best in the middle of the day.

What is hard about it

This is a fifteen-minute stop at most. The immediate surroundings are industrial and shabby in places, which affects the setting more than the bridge itself.

Common questions

Can I walk across it?

Yes, it carries foot traffic and is in use. Watch for vehicles where the approach is shared.

Is it the same as the one at Haghpat?

No. This bridge sits below Sanahin in the Debed valley; Haghpat is a separate monastery higher up on the other side.

Is there anything else at the site?

Not really. It is the bridge, the river and the carved parapet figures, which is why it pairs with the monasteries rather than standing alone.
